Mistaken Identity

Mistaken Identity

A coincidence? Perhaps.

On touching down at the Calgary airport this year, on our way to the the Canadian Rockies for some spring skiing, Jeanne and I proceeded through the terminal to pick up a vehicle at the rental office. We were not sure exactly what vehicle make would be available, but to our amazement it was a brand new, black Mazda 3.

The reason that surprised us is that this is exactly the same make of car that Jeanne has back in Toronto, although hers is the Speed 3 model which has the turbo-charged engine. So we felt right at home.

Upon arriving in Canmore an hour or so later, as usual, we stopped and I parked on Main Street in order that we could walk around for some exercise, visit a few shops and later have dinner. Then we continue further west to beautiful Emerald Lake near Field, BC. That is where we stay for a week or two while skiing at nearby mountains of Kicking Horse, Lake Louise and Sunshine.

On returning to our parked vehicle, it was Jeanne's turn to drive so I gave her the fob and from the sidewalk watched her enter the drivers side door. Her jaw dropped and I could see her looking at the inside pocket of the driver's side door. I quickly realized what she was thinking as two opened cans of beer were sitting in the door pocket.

As Jeanne's glance quickly switched over to my direction, I instantaneously grasped that hey, this was not our car. And I could visualize that she was obviously wondering how I could have consumed a couple of beers on the drive out from the city without her noticing.

We both burst out laughing as we observed that our vehicle was two cars back. They were a very close match. We still laugh about this now and then, months later.
